City Hall of Los Angeles
Located at 200 N. Spring Street, the Los Angeles City Hall was built in 1928. The total costs were of over 9 million dollars. The building above Main Street is 454 feet tall and has 32 floors. It was designed by architects John Parkinson and Albert C. Martin, Sr. The top of the building resembles one of the seven wonders of the world, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. From 1928 to 1964, the City Hall of Los Angeles was the tallest building in all California. Because of seismic concerns, no Los Angeles building was allowed to exceed its height. On the 27th floor of the City Hall there is an observatory open to the public. We invite you to visit it.
A famous building, the City Hall of Los Angeles won in 2001 the American Public Works Association Historic Preservation Award and the AIA Building Team of the year Award. In 2002, it won the Cultural Heritage Commission Award.
All the City Hall’s facilities cover almost 21 acres, one square block in the Civic Center. It is bordered by the Spring, Temple, Main, and 1st Streets.
