Jesse Owens Stadium
If you love football and athletics, then no visit to Los Angeles is complete if you don’t come to the Jesse Owens Stadium. Located at 5151 State University Drive, above the San Bernardino and Long Beach freeways, the Jesse Owens Stadium was opened in 1958. It offers 5000 seats and it is made of a natural grass football field surrounded by a 400-meter synthetic track with eight lanes. The Recaflex-S synthetic track’s costs, completed in 1983, were paid for by the Atlantic-Richfield Company, a well known Olympic sponsor. The stadium was named after Jesse Owens, the gold medalist of the 1936 Olympic Games. In 2004, a new press box was added.
Managed by the university, the Jesse Owens Stadium now houses the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles soccer team, as well as cross county, field and track teams. Come see them compete and you won’t regret it. There are many types of events held at the Jesse Owens Stadium, including the University’s commencement ceremony.
